Lot tracking lets you record the manufacturer’s lot number on each ammo record so you can trace rounds back to a specific production batch. This matters for consistency — match shooters often want to shoot rounds from the same lot to minimize variance — and for safety, since a manufacturer recall will reference a specific lot number. My Kit stores the lot alongside caliber, brand, and quantity so you can identify and isolate affected stock quickly.

Record a lot number

When adding or editing an ammo record, enter the manufacturer’s lot number in the Lot number field.
The lot number field is freeform text. Enter exactly what the manufacturer prints on the box or case label — there is no required format. Common formats include numeric strings (L231045A), date codes (2024-09-12), or alphanumeric codes (FED9MM-1102B). Whatever appears on the packaging is the right value.
If you buy multiple boxes from the same lot, you can either combine them into a single record (adding the quantities together) or keep them as separate records. Separate records make it easier to retire individual boxes if a partial lot is involved in a recall.

Organize ammo by storage location

The Storage location field is a freeform text label that records where a particular batch of ammo lives. Use it to track physical locations like:
  • Safe - Shelf 2
  • Range Bag
  • Ammo Can - Closet
  • Garage Cabinet - Top Shelf
There is no enforced naming scheme, but consistent labels make filtering and auditing faster. If you store different calibers in the same location, use the same location string for each so you can mentally group them.
If you do a periodic inventory check, sort the ammo list by Storage location. All rounds in the same physical spot will group together, making it straightforward to count boxes on a shelf and compare against what My Kit shows.
The Designated firearm field creates a soft link between an ammo record and one of the firearms in your kit. Use it when you keep a dedicated supply for a particular gun — for example, a box of self-defense hollow points loaded exclusively for a carry pistol, or a stash of match-grade .308 reserved for a precision rifle. When a designated firearm is set:
  • You can filter the ammo list to show only rounds assigned to a given firearm.
  • During range session logging, My Kit can surface the correct ammo record automatically when you select that firearm.
The field is optional. Training ammo shared across multiple firearms of the same caliber works fine without a designation.

Use consistent caliber names

The Ammunition On Hand chart on the main dashboard groups round counts by the exact caliber string on each record. If the same caliber is stored under different names, it will appear as multiple separate entries in the chart.
Pick one name per caliber and use it everywhere. Common conventions:
CaliberUse thisAvoid
9mm Luger9mm9x19mm, 9mm Luger, 9mm Para
5.56 NATO5.56 NATO.223 Rem, 5.56x45mm
.308 Winchester.308 Win7.62 NATO, 7.62x51mm, .308
.45 ACP.45 ACP.45 Auto, 45 ACP
If you already have records with inconsistent names, edit each record and standardize the caliber field. The chart will update immediately.

Add extra lot details in notes

The Notes field accepts any freeform text. Use it to capture information that doesn’t fit the structured fields:
  • Velocity data from a chronograph
  • Point-of-impact shift compared to a previous lot
  • Where you bought the ammo and at what price (if you track cost separately)
  • Recall status if a lot is under investigation
Notes are displayed in the record detail view and are searchable from the ammo list search bar.

Lot tracking workflow summary

A complete lot-tracked ammo record looks like this:
FieldExample value
Caliber9mm
BrandFederal
Product lineHST
Lot numberL231045A
Storage locationSafe - Shelf 2
Designated firearmGlock 19 (linked)
NotesChronoed avg 1,125 fps from G19 4" barrel
Filling in these fields takes an extra minute when you log a new purchase, but it gives you a traceable, organized record you can act on immediately if a recall is announced or if you need to reproduce a match result.
